Voice of America: UX Research

When VOA needed cross-cultural, multilingual, global research to drive their design process, SPARK was the clear choice.

The Challenge

Voice of America broadcasts news to 172 million people weekly in 45 languages across the globe.

With so many cultural nuances and differences in technology usage, it is difficult for VOA to ensure they are having the desired reach.

VOA called upon SPARK to conduct cross-cultural research in five countries and five languages to understand how to better communicate with the people of the world.

The Approach

SPARK conducted usability testing and ethnographic research on location in Iraq, Pakistan, Turkey, Peru, and Venezuela.

  • Contextual Inquiry

We paid special attention to the unique context of each location’s language, culture, and political environment.

The Outcome

Through our cross-cultural research, SPARK discovered design issues and unique digital and social media trends.

SPARK created user-friendly, engaging, and culturally nuanced design improvements to better support VOA’s goal of providing access to information across the globe.
